Report: Simulated Work Experience

During this time of the simulated work experience with Victoria Milcheva. As an assistant, by referring to her original character designs, I mainly worked on the keyframes and in-betweens for her.

Victoria’s animation is talking about an adventure story happening to a little girl within her drawings. In that fantasy, she explored the juggle with her friend– a bunny and a fluffy lion.

In the first week, after some little accident happened– my last peer sent me a message saying she is in her gap year and so on. Steve has helped me to solve the problem and find Victoria, then I finally started my assistant experience : )

Character Design by Victoria

After I watched all of the works she did so far, Victoria has a really cute and stylised character design, which is pretty different from mine. So I decided to ask for the in-between works for her in the first place, in case I might affect her drawing style. But according to Victoria’s working timeline, I need to assist her to finish the keyframe in advance and start the in-betweens on week2.

I was allocated to the keyframes of scenes 25, 28 and 30. For the 25, I worked pretty well and smooth also received compliments from the ‘client’. Flowing up to scenes 28 and 30, I then have got some requests :

The rough proportion needs to be changed
The process of changing the character proportions

For the first draft, I have received the feedback of the character looks too skinny, then there is the second draft, but it still does not really reach the expectation. So after having a long discussion, we both have made an agreement on draft three, in which I assist with the movement keys for her, then she draws the character look in her own style. The keyframe scenes 28 and 30 both have received approving feedback.

scene 30 keyframes

In the second week, I have been given some in-between works to do with scenes 12, 13, 14, and 15. This process has moved really fast within this week, there were rarely barriers to affect me to finish them. Here are some outcomes and short feedbacks down below :

scene 12 feedback: very nice~
scene 13 feedback: looks good~
scene 14 used to have some hand proportion problems, but get fixed in the last.
scene 15 is worked good

SUMMARY

What have I learned the most from this experience?

  1. Personally I really like the way how Victoria sets the working timetable for her animations, each process have coriespond to each period, also looks very clear. I flet that myself has definitely leaned some time management here.
  2. Some technique experiences, like some software skills I used to missed out, during this time I working on Victoria’s tvpaint files, I have got chance to pick them up.

What should I be aware of the most in future practice?

  1. Always drawing everthing rough and rough in the animation! The movement and performance are the most important things ever, do not clean up the lines so rushlly. (blaming on my BA course was the illsutration T T bad habits)
  2. Always making sure to figure out what your “client” requirments are at the first place, as clear as you can, and then, make sure you double checked with them, eventhough they might not ask you to do so, you need to be the proactive one.
